Acupuncture is the use of needles that encourages natural healing, reduces or relieves pain and improves function of affected areas of the body. Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine sterile disposable needles at specific points on the body. There is no injection of any substance from the needles. Medical acupuncture is safe and effective and is often successfully used as an alternative to medication or even surgery.
Medical acupuncture, developed from the study of Classical Chinese acupuncture, refers to the more modern approach taken today by the Canadian Academy of Medical Acupuncture (CAMA) and by the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute (AFCI).
Acupuncture stimulates the body to produce its own pain relieving chemicals called endorphins, which are the body’s naturally occurring painkillers. The effect produced by acupuncture stimulates the body’s natural healing abilities, reducing inflammation, and promoting physical and emotional well-being. The World Health Organization has identified the benefits of medical acupuncture in the treatment of a wide range of medical problems.
Physiotherapists at Pro Care Physiotherapy & Athletes’ Injury Center can use acupuncture in conjunction with other forms of traditional physiotherapy to help the patient reach their recovery goals.
